Vinny’s Story
Vinny, a handsome 6yr old Collie, was admitted late at night to Goolds Vet Clinic suffering severe seizures. Conor immediately sedated Vinny to stop the seizures and put him on an IV drip. Conor suspected slug pellet poisoning having seen many cases in his 25 years in practice. Under deep sedation Vinny’s stomach was pumped and a quantity of slug pellet bait was flushed out. Over the next few days Vinny was stabilised and kept on an IV drip and sedation to prevent further fitting. Blood tests were run to check for organ damage but luckily, thanks to his owners quick response and Conors care, his liver and kidney function were not affected. Vinny is recovering very well now at the clinic and enjoying all the TLC he is receiving from the staff. He will be going home in the next few days to continue his recovery.Slug pellet poisoning is a very serious condition in our pets and often leads to death or long term organ damage. When gardening we should always be aware of this risk to people’s pets and avoid the use of these products where possible.
Bailey’s Story
2011 got off to a busy start at Goolds Vet Clinic with a major emergency admitted New Year’s Eve.
Bailey a 6yr old English Sheepdog was admitted to the Clinic at 4am on New Year’s Eve suffering from a life-threatening condition, Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus, whereby the stomach becomes twisted and swells up with gas, fluids and food material.
Bailey required an urgent procedure to decompress his stomach and after a few hours on a drip to stabilise him he underwent a 4 hour surgery to correct the twist in his stomach and remove his spleen as the blood supply to it had been cut off due to the torsion.
A large percentage of dogs suffering from this condition do not survive but luckily Bailey proved to be a very tough cookie and recovered well after surgery. He stayed at the clinic for 1 week following his operation, during which time he won the hearts of all the staff. Bailey has since returned home to his owners Sonja and Vincent where he is doing very well and thoroughly enjoying all the TLC he is receiving.
A good start to 2011 for all!
